The USS Midway was an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy and the lead ship of its class. The Midway was commissioned a week after the end of World War II and was the largest ship in the world until 1955, as well as the first U.S. aircraft carrier too big to transit the Panama Canal. The revolutionary hull design was based on the planned Montana-class battleship, which gave it better maneuverability than previous carriers. The ship operated for 47 years, during which time it saw action in the Vietnam War and served as the Persian Gulf flagship in 1991's Operation Desert Storm. The ship was decommissioned in 1992 and is the only remaining U.S. aircraft carrier of the World War II era that is not an Essex-class aircraft carrier.

Loved the Midway --- next time, however, I'll go in the cooler weather. Man, the day I went was so hot...and there's not much relief from the heat inside the Midway. Awesome experience!
ReplyDeleteEydie Stumpf, I totally agree about going in cooler weather. Totally enjoyed walking around the Midway, but below deck was warm!
